Dark Woods Soap Co. Fresh Grapefruit Shampoo Review

dark woods1

I’ve been on the hunt for a budget-friendly, natural shampoo and I stumbled upon Dark Woods Soap Co. awhile back. I was searching through Etsy and happened to find their store through one of my searches. I ended up purchasing a 4.5-5 oz bar of shampoo soap for about $6.50. The item was shipped very quickly and packaged quite nicely with a sample of Masala Chai soap.

First off, the packaging is really nice. I love that you can plant the wrapper (which is made of seed paper) and grow flowers! How cool is that? I’ve used a solid conditioner bar from Lush in the past, so I just re-used my Lush tin to keep my bar from getting wet from the shower. I really love the simple ingredient list of the shampoo bar and that it is a multi-purpose product. You can use it as a body soap and I’ve also used it as a “shaving cream” and it seems to work well.

The grapefruit scent is lightly fragrant, but unfortunately the scent doesn’t linger long after it’s been washed out. The bar does lather quite well, which surprised me because I’m used to natural bars lacking the lather that we’ve grown accustomed to with commercial products. I’ve been using the bar for the past two weeks and I’m not sure if I would repurchase this bar as a shampoo product. Since using this product, I feel like my hair seems drier and more prone to tangles. However, I just purchased a new conditioner by Acure Organics, so I’m still trying it out and seeing if the new combination will work. Otherwise, I’ll be back to shampoo hunting again. :/

Edit: It looks like for the meantime, I’ll be using this as a body soap as it is very moisturizing, but it just doesn’t help my hair the way I’d hoped it would.  I still recommend their soap products, but wouldn’t recommend using their shampoo bars for your hair.

Here is an excerpt from the Etsy listing that I purchased:
Saponified Oils: Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Organic Sustainable Palm Oil, Castor Oil; Tussah Silk, Rosemary Oleoresin, Grapefruit Essential Oil, Fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.
The Soap~This soap has the wonderful, refreshing scent of grapefruit, and a bubbly, rich lather. My shampoo bars can most certainly be used as both a shampoo AND regular soap! If you have never used an all natural shampoo bar before, it may take your hair a few days to get used to the change. But it will be worth it. :)~Benefits:
Grapefruit Juice is extremely high in Vitamin A, which is said to be one of the essential vitamins to strengthen hair follicles. The essential oil is used to keep hair healthy and strong, and to treat dandruff!People generally ask me, “What makes a shampoo bar different from a regular bar of soap?”
With DarkWoods soap, there are two major differences…
#1- I add a much higher percentage of Castor Oil, which gives the soap its fluffy lather. Your hair will lather up just like your using liquid shampoo!
#2- I add cruelty-free Tussah Silk, which is a silk protein. It dissolves into my mixture, so you are actually using silk to wash your hair. Very fancy!___________________________________________________________________________

~ All of my shampoo bars can also be used as regular soap!

~All-natural shampoo soap is different form conventional store bought shampoo. It is infinitely better for you, but it may take a few days for your hair to adjust to the changes.

~My labels are made from seeded paper. If you plant them, they will grow! Just soak in water to germinate, and plant right in your yard or flower pot!

~Handmade soap will have a much longer life if it is allowed to dry after you use it. Make sure to use a draining soap dish.

~The above statements have not been approved by the FDA. This product is not meant to treat, diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.

Verdict: A great natural soap product for the body, but maybe not so much for your hair.
